OPTOSYSTEMS PLATOSCAN SOFTWARE

Developed by Optosystems, the Platoscan software creates an ablation control file required to perform aberrometry-guided customized correction. Customized operations computed by Platoscan can be later carried out on ophthalmosurgical system Microscan Visum. Customized correction facilitates treatment of irregular refractive errors. It also ensures improved postoperative vision in standard surgeries.
Aberrometer measures the refractive defects of the entire optical path of an eye. This makes it possible to take into account (when computing the surgery) not only corneal defects but also refractive anomalies introduced by all the optical elements of the eye.
PlatoScan can compute eximer laser ophthalmic surgeries based on data from the following aberrometers:

- Visionix L80
- Imagine Eyes IRX3.
Currently, the following aberrometers are recommended for use with Platoscan: Topcon KR-1W and Visionix L80. These aberrometers yield the highest aberration measurement quality. Their main characteristics include:

- Minimal eye illumination in the visible light range, which ensures widest possible pupil when measuring aberrations
Computing surgeries using Platoscan
Platoscan gives the user direct access to the database of patients dignosed with the Topcon KR-1W aberrometer.
Measurements are carried out based on aberrometer output data presented in the form of Zernike polynomials to the 8th order. Spherocylindrical correction can be set in a conventional form (Sph, Cyl/Axis). The user can optionally enable and disable correction based on aberrations of different orders and on individual Zernike polynomials. This allows the surgeon to accurately select the optimum correction for a particular clinical case.
To achieve high-quality postoperative vision in PlatoScan, we developed new customized ablation technologies with extended (bigger than pupil size) optical zone of surgery – Patent RU 2 537 069 C2 of 27 December 2014. This, in particular, provides high-quality night vision.
During measurements, Platoscan generates a file, which is subsequently transmitted to Microscan Visum. In addition to the computed surgery and personal patient data, the file contains data on geometric comparison of the position and torsion orientation of the eye during aberrometry measurements and during surgery.
Clinical outcomes
Surgeries computed using the Platoscan software conform to modern standards of efficiency and safety of refractive ophthalmic surgeries.
Platoscan-computed surgeries showed good results in complex clinical cases, when refractive pathology comprised of a large share of higher-order aberrations, and therefore could not be corrected with spherocylindrical lens (repeated surgeries, eyes that have suffered infections and other pathological processes, etc.)
For standard correction on intact eyes, Platoscan-computed surgeries provide better post-operative sight than that of conventional surgeries. In particular, post-operative visual acuity in more than half of the cases is 120% and above for Platoscan operations. Therefore, surgery computation in Platoscan is widely used for standard surgeries.
